The Nel family and team at Boplaas Family Vineyards invites you to a weekend of family fun, good food and wonderful wine in an intimate celebration of the return of springtime. Our family has been tending vines and crafting wines since 1880 in this harsh yet beautiful region of the Cape, with the tradition continuing to this day with the 7th generation Nel winemaker in charge of crafting fine table wines, traditional Cape fortifieds, and pot still brandies. The Nel’s Boplaas can trace their lineage, as many South African families can, back to the very first French Huguenots who were forced to leave France due to religious persecution and made their way to the southern tip of Africa and the Cape of Good Hope in These Huguenots families played a critical part in the agricultural history of the Cape, but moreover they brought to African shores a wine culture which has prevailed in the Cape to this day. In the mid-19th century the Nel family settled in the picturesque hamlet of Calitzdorp at the heart of the semi-arid Klein Karoo. Come and experience the range of the Boplaas Family Vineyard’s wines, only a stone’s throw from the crashing surf of the Southern Cape coast. This child-friendly facility is situated on a farm, offering cheese platters and Boplaas’ wines to be enjoyed under the trees or on the stoep during the December school holidays. We will be presenting a range of our Portuguese variety table wines, Cape Ports and craft distillery range. Located at the very eastern edge of the Cape winelands and along the picturesque Route 62, lies the quaint Klein Karoo hamlet of Calitzdorp, where the almost 60 hectares of vineyards tended by the Nels of Boplaas are to be found. At first glance this rugged semi-dessert region may seem far from hospitable to the cultivation of vines. However, the rich ancient alluvial soils, marked day-night temperature differences and canal system to divert water from the Nels’ and Gamkaskloof dams, the vines, apricot and peach orchards flourish, creating an oasis of sorts. The climatic conditions of Caltizdorp are ideal for these hardy Portuguese vines and allow for the crafting of truly unique table wines. To this end we use a small portion of fruit from premier vineyards and old vine sites with trusted growers, from as far afield as Darling along the West Coast, the Helderberg around Stellenbosch and high altitude sites of the nearby Outeniqua Mountains.
